RUMA Launches Its New Initiative “CPD For All”
It was standing room only at the new initiative launched
by RUMA (Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance) to encourage
communication and education between veterinary surgeons, pharmacists and
suitably qualified persons (SGPs). House full notices had gone round a week
before and faxes were sent to warn against persons possibly arriving on
spec. What was the attraction? It was a CPD programme entitled “Parasites in
the Large and Small” aimed to provide a similar standard of education to all
those who can dispense veterinary medicines in the legal category POM-VPS.
The local British Veterinary Association division,
Shropshire Veterinary Association (SVA), arranged the event and invited
pharmacists and SQPs to join them to enjoy an evening and hear three
fascinating presentations on different aspects of the subject. About a third
of those present came from veterinary practices with the rest mainly being
made up of SQPs. More..

30 March 2009 - PRESS RELEASE
RUMA promotes 'as little as possible, but as much as necessary' antibiotic
use, for the good of animal health and welfare
Veterinarians need the full range of antibiotics to help
protect the health and welfare of Britain’s farm animals, and to help ensure
the safety of food derived from those animals.
RUMA welcomes the call by the Chief Medical Officer for
the responsible use of antibiotics in both humans and animals – something
the Alliance has being promoting through vets and their farmer clients since
its establishment over 10 years ago. However, RUMA feels suggestions that
certain groups of antibiotics – cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones – should
be taken away from veterinary use is short sighted. It would be
counterproductive and detrimental to animal – and ultimately human – health
and welfare. More.....
11 December 2008 - RUMA rounds off its 10th year in style with a

25 June 2008 - RUMA celebrates its 10th anniversary!
RUMA held one of its main 10th anniversary celebration events at the
Farmers Club in London - a seminar called 'A responsibility to change - a
challenge for RUMA'. It was chaired by Bill Wiggin MP (Shadow Minister for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), and included RUMA chairmen past (Brian
Jennings) and present (Peter Allen) looking at the initial challenges which
led to the establishment of the Alliance and its role today. The
sixty-strong guest list of leaders from the British food chain heard a
number of speakers highlighting the future challenges RUMA faces, and why it
still has a major role now.

Vaccination - get it right
The vaccination of the first animals against Bluetongue
virus has been very much in the farming – and indeed public – eye this
month. It has been welcomed as a major breakthrough in fighting disease and
securing good farm animal health and welfare.
But of course Bluetongue is not the only disease that can
be prevented by vaccination, and cattle and sheep are not the only species
that can benefit. All cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry can receive the
benefits of vaccines to prevent them breaking down with disease. However for
this to be as effective as possible vaccination must be done RIGHT.
